7 Years This Week: On August 18, 2018—seven years ago this week—Robert Wickens’ life changed forever. While running fourth in the 13th round of the INDYCAR season at Pocono, a devastating crash left him with a thoracic spinal fracture, spinal cord injury, and more than 14 broken bones, resulting in paralysis.
But in the years since, Wickens has rewritten the narrative. He’s become a symbol of determination, breaking barriers both on and off the racetrack. Since returning to competition using hand controls, he’s claimed two race wins, multiple podiums, a pole position, and a series championship.
This season, he made history with a second-place finish at the Nürburgring 24—becoming the first driver to achieve that feat using hand controls—and has consistently run inside the top five in each of his GTD races with DXDT Racing in the Corvette Z06 GT3.R.
Off the track, Wickens’ story is just as inspiring. He became a father to son Wesley in 2023, and he and his wife Karli are now expecting twins. He has become a trailblazer within the disabled community as works to improve the future of public mobility through the modernization of hand control options.
Sprints Complete: VIR is the final sprint race of the 2025 IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship. Robert Wickens will complete his 2025 season at VIR. DXDT Racing’s endurance drivers Salih Yoluc and Charlie Eastwood will return for the remaining two rounds at Indy and Road Atlanta.
